What an amazingly colorful and warm day they had!

Eileen comes from a very large family. (Which had Denyse, my 2nd photographer and great great friend, talking all the way home. About having billions of babies and loving a big family.)

Everything ran so smoothy, they had a pretty perfect day...

This was one of those days where I talked the bride in to being ready about 2 hours before her ceremony. So worth it! We got tons of bridal party photos right at her hotel.

They also gave me all the time I wanted for portraits (I really like 2 ours minimum).

Total payoff, their personality shines in every photos!

I always love this moment, when dad sees the bride, his daughter. Even if there is not a total emotional outbreak in the room, there is still a tiny one that I always capture.

Heather was totally laid back and SOOOO organized. She had so much time for portraits before the ceremony. I was in love! I almost didn't want to give her away to Jeff?!?

July was the perfect month for a wedding!

I am right about in the middle of wedding season..still have a lot of weddings to showcase here.

Always looking for new things to show you.

Let's start with the preparation:

This part is really fun. I love how the mood goes from very light to more nervous in moments. As soon as the dress is on, the nerves kick in.

Something new this year:

I bring studio lighting for church formals. I think it is an absolute must for poorly lit churches. Makes a huge difference. Really showcases your family. I don't love church formals. Not many photographers do, but a wedding is a rare occasion to get great group photos of your family!

I always try and encourage wedding parties to venture outside the church or to a different part. This church in particular had a lot of meaning for the bride and groom.

The bride's grandfather was a pastor here....that makes the photos here that much more important!

I am so excited that people are now making time during their day for portraits. This is so much fun and really important if you want a lot of great choices~

and I have some really PERFECT spots to tell you about during our meeting.

I really recommend you allow more time, like 2-3 hours. Sounds crazy, but especially if you have a large bridal party, you want time to travel, time to arrange, and time to just set up and have fun.

It was perfection. I loved the glow...

When I met Tanya, she was positive she wanted a BBQ style wedding and to just have fun and marry her man!

She did it!

It was a beautiful, hot sunny day by the lake.

A perfect day for an outdoor ceremony and portraits.

I loved the cake!!!

(and so did one of their smallest guests, he kept asking me, "do you think it would be alright if I just eat one of those chocolates??" Ha!)

During thier dance, they sung the whole song to each other... I am a total sucker for that kind of thing. Adorable.

I had fun going all beachy on the editing of this one for the blog....I mean we were at the beach, kinda?!!

Two other photographers that I work with will be there on their and I will help with the editing, but I could not resist being a part of the engagement photos!!!

Ask your photographer to show you what their unedited images look like!! If they scrunch up their face and so now way Jose!! Well, there may be a problem!

I knew they had great taste and just that super cool, laid back energy.

What was totally a beautiful part of their story; Kim's grandmother met Kevin and thought he would be a great match for Kim. Although their first meeting was not anything out of a story book, the fact that her grandmother matched them up is something they both totally cherish. It was so wonderful to have her there as a part of the celebration!

I soooo recommend having me there for the preparation. I make sure and hide when you want me too (don't want to give away too many beauty secrets..) and then I am back to get the pretty little details, the girl talk, and the total break down grip of terror (which of course never happens...*wink*)

Lots of fun things have been going on. Spring has sprung, after a long winter, some hard work is paying off.

FIRST, -----Studio 180------

my biggest and most exciting news: I have joined together with a group of very talented photographers and now have a GORGEOUS (yah I know) NEW, FANCY, COOL, MODERN, PERFECT, FULL OF LIGHT studio.

We will be using it for meeting space (can't wait to show it off to all my 2011 bride and grooms)

and of course to do sessions in!

It is open and ready for business...

It is a great option for a rainy day, boudoir, newborn or just because you want something totally different!

We will be having an open house at the end of May..more to come on that!

Bring on Wedding Season 2010!!!!

I have so many beautiful couples already on my calendar this season.

This was a perfect wedding to start the year off right!

Let's say this is Part I, too may gorgeous details to share in one post. I will let you soak it in and then share some more.

This ceremony and reception took place at the Delmonte Lodge in Pittsford.

Can I say the food was AMAZING and I worked with Pam who was so helpful and there the whole event. The bride has wonderful things to say about her as well!

The ceremony was quaint and special.

They did a reading from the Velveteen Rabbit. So fitting...

Besides the fact that I knew Tricia and Dexter were going to be fun to work with, that Tricia has amazing taste, and that they have a family full of gorgeous children, I also could not wait to do bridal photos in the snow...

We had a beautiful courtyard, but only about 15 degrees to work with. We managed to get outside for just a bit..just enough time to capture what I wanted...

Then into the the party..details to die for!

Some vendor to mention for all of you planning away:

The bouquet! (My sister is going to kill me) WEGMANS...um one of the most gorgeous bouquets I have ever seen (and believe me, I have seen a lot of them!)

crystals, feathers...

The decor was a lot of DIY things Tricia thought of and worked with Pam at Delmonte on.

Instead of a guest book, they asked guests to fill in a thought card.

The table arrangements were just stunning, white birds and crystals on twigs, perfection.

A list of must have's for every successful wedding:

2. Big beautiful window to peer out. Even if it is just because your photographer makes you do it!

3. A Bouquet to die for! (I know my gorgeous brides all think I am crazy when I spend so much time photographing the thing..but it is one of the many stars of the wedding).

How do I know this couple will grow very old together?

(Besides that they can care for each other's health....)

Makes it all worth while / Rochester NY Wedding Photographer

I recieved a thank you card in the mail from Andrea and Jason last week. Loved it!

And then just a couple days ago this lovely email from her mom:

"I just want to say a huge thank you for the amazing job that you have done with the photo's. You have captured every moment of the day and this is something that I will treasure for the rest of my life. Andrea is our only daughter and as you know we live in England. As she is settling in Chicago we won't get to see her as often as we would like. Well I know that whenever I am missing her that I can look through the photo's and remember the amazing day we had and why it is worth being so many miles away coz she is so happy. You have captured every bit of the fun and happiness. I will never forget her grin from cheek to cheek when she walked down that aisle and throughout the ceremony. Brides are supposed to be all nervous but you have captured how much they both enjoyed their special moment and how much fun we had, wheelchairs and all!

I am so glad we choose you, I actually forgot you were there. Its been a huge anti climax returning to England and returning to work etc however you have cheered up my days as I cant help but keep looking at the photos, reliving every part of it.

You are a credit to the profession and I wish you every bit of luck in your next wedding season."

Why pay so much for a wedding photographer?

Each event is totally different for me.

I have my favorite shots that I always love to get and I find a new one with each event.

But really I try to be in tune with the couple I am spending the day with and environment I am in.

As I recieve emails from bridal customers and talk about pricing and such, I hear a lot of different situations and thoughts on photography and it's importance at each wedding.

I obviously think it is really a no brainer. Get the best you can afford!

It is the only thing left besides your relationship and a couple champaign glasses when all the dust settles.

It is one of those days where you are with so many people in your life that are important to you.

It is the oppurtunity to get that photo of you and your dad, that you cherish when that day comes and he is no longer there to slow dance with.

These are photos of you and more mom, nervously awaiting the pomp and circumstance, almost as close and gitty as you were in your bedroom before the 8th grade dance.

One of those occasions where people you wouldn't expect get emotional about your happiness.

and of course the day that you and your soul mate are allowed to be totally head over heals for eachother for everyone to see.

How could you not want all of those things captured!??

So I realize, you do want those things captured, but you sometimes you just can't afford to have it done properly.

Hmmm..properly.

Well, frankly, I worry for you.

I have heard, "Awe, well we decided to let my cousin with a nice camera take the photos".

Or my friends who is a "photographer"

A word of caution.

And beleive me I know.

Take your wedding photography seriously,of course take a chance on a new photographer, everyone has to start somewhere.

Take a look at there work and make sure they have arrived at wedding photography after having mastered everything.

But don't take a chance on a friend with a nice camera.

What can you do?

Get a practice shoot?

Ask them if they have photographed indoors, in the evening.

Ask them what kind of equipment they have, do they have a spare if thiers stops working?

Do they have editing software?

And ....................

rant over.

PS, call or email that photographer you really do want to hire. Things are getting wild up in here folks, and dates are flying out the window. I WANT to be at your event,

especially if you have been following my work and really want to work with me. I love that! So don't wait any more!

I promised long ago that I would do some reviewing of the sites that I have been to for weddings this season. I am going to try and get to them. Lots of really beautiful ideas.

I will work backwards!

The Filagree Inn, was really unique.

I had never been there for a wedding or at all really, however I have driven by it many times and thought it looked like a beautiful venue.

Stacy and Bill: A beautiful couple!!

There are really so many possibilities for backgrounds for portraits.

Beautiful cast iron benches and gardens.

The forest backdrop and prestine grounds.

It is ideal to have a place to get ready right on site, and really the room was amazing as well. Great, simple,elegant decor.

The couple who own the Inn are there, welcoming you and your guests.

They make sure cars are moved and eveything is running smoothly so your event is perfect and so are you photos!

There is a field of wild flowers, various benches and many other back drops we just did not get to, but lots of options.

This was amazing.

I never even heard Andrea's voice (and a lovely one, with a really cool accent it is) before showing up to photograph her wedding day!

On top of that my sister (In bloom) did all her gorgeous flowers and my friend and awesome baker Laura (Simply Sweets) did her desserts.

Needless to say, I was really excited before I even arrived.

She had the most amazing room (the tower room -ask for it Belhurst Brides).

I wish I wish....
I would have thought of this!

1st, the Filagree Inn, it was so cool..
and the owners were at the wedding making sure everything was perfect!
(That is really rare to see, makes you feel at ease.)
It was a gorgeous setting, so relaxed.
I hope to be back...not just to weddings, but maybe to stay!

Uh Huh, it was hot, but what better weather for a tropical theme.
The flowers, the cake, the dresses. Everyone wore Hawaiian shirts and dresses. It was so colorful!
The flowers were out of this world (or at least the area...)

Going Casual:
I actually wore flip flops (and so did she and most everyone else). Um, would that in itself just have totally MADE your wedding. It would have made mine!

Just plain having fun:

And of course it was clear to everyone, they have a life together. Full of friends and family, it was great to celebrate that life and see a family united.

Possibly one of the most moving father daughter dances I have seen.

Wonderful night had by all!

Duh, hire me...

Ha!

But additonally, as my 1st season of wedding photography pushes forward I have had my eyes wide open, my notepad out, and my wheels are turning.

I have learned my own lessons, but also I have seen some things brides and grooms can do to ensure photos look the way they want them!

Break it down...

Getting gorgeous time:

For those photos of the bride getting ride and the groom hanging out with his buds (Because the whole getting ready takes them like 10 minutes tops for the groom).
There are some things to keep in mind:

1. Natural light-
It makes a world of difference. Find a room where you can turn off over head lights. I room with lots of windows. Pull up the shades and sit near the windows. Totally changes the atmosphere of photos. If I don't have to use flash, you get a much more natural feel.

2. De-clutter-
I know it is hard, everyone is nervous, everyone is together, it is a flurry!!! I try and pick up as I go, to get shots that don't have panty hose boxes next to the bride, but I also like to try and pay attention to what is going on! Assign one of your bridesmaid as clean up patrol. Keep everyones "stuff" in one area or a different room.

3. Gather the details and think about where you want them.-
Hang the dress up somewhere cool! Put all your jewelry together with your garter, veil, shoes, make up, gift...

4. Save time-
A lot of times the bride thinks...I don't want to be sitting around dressed! You do a little! Or else I don't get to photograph you. This time before you walk down the isle is a perfect chance to get those gorgeous shots of just you, you and your mom, you and your bridesmaids. With some privacy. You may think of a place besides your room where we can go and not be seen to get some great before photos! (You will be so happy you did).

5. Finally, pretty much ditto to the guys for everything I said above!!
Keep your room clean! Turn off the lights and open the windows!! and Get dressed on time. (I know, I sound like mom...wait, I am one).

My Mother's Day Contest winner was announced a while ago, the winner is not actually located in Rochester. Because of that I wanted to recognize a NY mom that I may actually have the oppurtunity to photograph!! (That is the point right?) :)

So I would like to share with you this heartfelt nominations and announce Karen Fahmer as an additional winner to the Mother's Day 2009 Contest!!

"I nominate this amazing woman and mom Karen Fahmer. I have actually only gotten the chance to meet with her in person once but have had several opportunities to talk with her over the phone and email. Karen has been through a lot this past year. Her son, Jacob, was born in January and passed away 138 days later in May from problems associated with Trisomy 18. She has chronicled their journey through her blog http://fahmer.blogspot.com/ and used it as an opportunity to help other mom's out there who have been through similar situations. She has visited several moms at the hospital or spoke with them over the phone. I am one of them as my son was stillborn in September of this year due to heart failure from a genetic disorder called Trisomy 13. She contacted me through a friend of a friend and was able to talk with me about things like no other mom could. She is currently pregnant with her 4th child. As you can she, she is gorgeous and I am sure she would love some glam pregnancy photos."

My mom is my best friend, my confidant and most important my mother. Let me start by saying I was not an easy child to raise. I traveled all over the world. I made monthly phone calls from random places and called when I was out of money. My parents were always there for me.

One time I went to South America for a week and didn't come back for a year. My mom had to cancel all my classes in the University. She didn't speak to me for 3 months. But I knew she loved me.

My father died 9 years ago. Now my mom is suffering from Chronic Renal Failure. She needs a kidney. They have told me I am overweight and cannot even be tested for compatibility. I am scared to lose my best friend, my confidant and most important my mother.

Another Amazing Mom \ Rochester NY Mother's Day Contest

She was wonderful raising four spirited girls, but she is even more amazing as a grandmother!

At 72, she is continuously driving and flying all over to her grandchildren and us daughters, to help. Can you believe it? Whenever we need her, she just magically appears with a smile on her face and more than enough hugs. At home, she takes care of our dad, and his business. She calls in payroll, makes sure the secretaries are all set, volunteers at the library two days a week, and plays in her church bell choir. I'm just floored at all she does at her age. Never once does she hesitate to help anyone. In her car, you always find puzzles, games, old food from McDonalds (ha ha), a booster seat, etc. She is prepared for all of us at any given time. Nothing seems to stop her. She drives to Boston frequently to babysit my one nephew, travels to Syracuse for a drumline show or two, drives to me to stay an overnight here and there to take Cam to breakfast so my morning will be easier once in awhile.

But that's not all.

When we all descend upon her home, she prepares 'feasts' to feed all 20+ of us, again with a smile. We never organize the events. We just kinda show up to play, and she happily darts to the freezer and whips up something yummy, and more importantly, kid approved!

I know she has had over 50 years to practice her seemingly effortless mommy skills, but she shines in any situation and always makes it look easy! My sisters and I all strive to this high standard she has wonderfully achieved.

And yet, something is missing: pictures of her. She is always behind the camera, or in the kitchen, or on the road to one of us. I would love to give her the opportunity to sit with a real photographer and capture her smile.

Mom, Neighbor, Friend...

I grew up across the street from Sue and her family so I don't remember a time in my life when she wasn't there. As a kid, her and her husband always offered a safe place for me to go. I became part of their family and one of the kids. Even though my real home was across the street, I never felt like a stranger in their home.

As I grew older, she was still a vital part of my life. When my mother passed away in 1998, Sue held my hand walking into the hospital room to say good-bye to my mom. As things changed in our lives, and my family began to go their separate ways, she took in my little brother. Her and her husband cleared a room for him in their house, already full with 6 people, and cared for him just like their own. Her caring heart led her to open her house for a 8th person and take in another "child" who needed parents as well.

I could go on forever about her, but she has been there for me daily and seen me through every situation imaginable. She has nursed wounds as a child from basic play, seen me through the death of my mother, advised me as a pregnant teen, through my miscarriage, and seen me on my wedding day.

Most recently, she has helped me in the delivery room and taken my daughter in as her granddaughter. I am blessed to have such a wonderful woman of integrity and strength to be there for me when I didn't have anyone else. I am blessed and honored to call her mom- a name I thought I would be too broken to use again.

Sue is a busy woman who works at a pediatricians office as a nurse during the week. She also is an elder's wife at our church and spends much of her time volunteering for different committees. She is a mother to 5 children, 4 biological and 1 "adopted", a mother-in-law, and a wonderful wife.

I was nervous, this was my first time flying solo!
But I LOVED it.
There were so many fun moments.
I loved our little sweety in purple: "Everyone else's dresses are pretty, buy mine is the prettiest" -her words
Brooke was the glue that kept everyone else together (folks, that is unheard of!)
She and her Dad were precious.
There was a surprise video presentation of Brooke dancing at a recital as a child. It brought tears to my eyes to see the family all together watching it, touching...
The couple, you just feel them.
